Special Issue on Brazilian Research in Mathematics Education - Call for Papers

Guest editor: Jonei Cerqueira Barbosa Federal University of Bahia (Brazil)

The Journal

The Mathematics Enthusiast (TME) - https://scholarworks.umt.edu/tme/ - has a thriving tradition of publishing research reports on Mathematics Education and related topics with a particular interest in critical issues and innovative approaches. The journal is a particularly effective way of promoting debates and disseminating scholarship worldwide as its statistics show: 474 papers published and more than 143,000 downloads, from more than 160 countries.

The electronic version of TME is hosted by the Department of Mathematical Sciences at the University of Montana in the United States. The journal maintains openaccess and no-fee policies. It is included in the Australian Education Index, EBSCO Products (Academic Search Complete), EDNA, the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ), Psyc-INFO (the APA Index), MathDI/MathEDUC (FiZ Karlsruhe), Journals in Higher Education (JIHE), SCOPUS, Ulrich's Periodicals Directory, and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (Thompson Reuters).

The Special Issue

This special issue builds on the Brazilian tradition in mathematics education research. Brazil’s contribution to the international debate is well-recognized, with examples including U. D'Ambrosio's (1985) ethnomathematics research and T. N. Carraher, D. W. Carraher and Schliemann's (1985) psychological studies. Brazilian research has expanded in many directions. Brazil-based researchers have published their results in various international journals and have consistently reported their findings at international conferences, such as PME Conferences and ICME.

Currently, there are dozens of research groups on mathematics education in the country, most of them involved in master’s and Ph.D. programs. The SBEM (Brazilian Society for Mathematical Education) brings together their research members in fifteen distinct working groups that cover different research agendas. There are previous publications that provided an overview of Brazilian scholarship to an international audience, such as a themed issue of ZDM (Borba & D’Ambrósio, 2010) and a book published by Springer (Ribeiro, Healy, Borba & Fernandes, 2018).

Now, the special issue of the TME seeks to present an update on the current state of Brazilian research in mathematics education for the international audience by publishing original and cutting-edge research findings related to the Brazilian context. Authors with results related to Brazil are welcome to submit their proposals. In particular, the special issue aims to be representative of diverse agendas, perspectives, and methodologies; include groups from different parts of the country; and achieve gender balance.

Submission Process

Authors are invited to submit an expanded abstract (800-1200 words), describing the rationale, methods, data and results of their papers. Research findings that have been presented at Brazilian conferences might be expanded and deepened in order to submit to this special call if they have not yet been published in a journal. Please include a short biography and full contact information for each author. Send the submission in a single document to Jonei Cerqueira Barbosa  ( O endereço de e-mail address está sendo protegido de spambots. Você precisa ativar o JavaScript enabled para vê-lo. ) using the subject "TME Special Issue". Authors of selected abstracts will be invited to submit full versions of their manuscripts for review.

Abstracts are accepted in English or Portuguese, but the final manuscripts must be written in grammatically correct English. All decisions will be made through a blind peerreview process. For any questions, please send a message to O endereço de e-mail address está sendo protegido de spambots. Você precisa ativar o JavaScript enabled para vê-lo. .
