Abstract

Realistic Mathematics Education is an approach to mathematics teaching advocated by Hans Freudenthal, a German mathematician who studied at the University of Utrecht (in the Netherlands) in opposition to the ideas of the Modern Mathematics Movement. In this theoretical essay, a brief historical overview of the Second World War, the Cold War and the curricular reforms of the 1950s and 1960s that culminated in the Modern Mathematics Movement is presented. Then, a short biography of Hans Freudenthal is presented, addressing aspects of his life and work; a brief history of the Dutch curriculum reform presided over by Freudenthal is also made. Finally, the six principles of Realistic Mathematics Education are presented, namely: activity, reality, level, interactivity, intertwinement and guidance.
