Abstract

This article presents research that aimed to investigate the mobilization of mental processes of representation and abstraction characteristic of Advanced Mathematical Thinking (AMT), in solving questions of the Brazilian Mathematics Olympiad for Public Schools (OBMEP). The research, qualitative in nature, was carried out based on the analysis of the resolutions of the test of 2nd stage of Level 3 of the 2021 edition of OBMEP, made by 5 high school students, gold medalists from the Valleys Region, located in the interior of Minas Gerais. The analysis evidenced the mobilization of the following mental processes characteristic of AMT: symbolic representation, change of representations and translation between them, visualization, modeling, synthesizing and generalization. The conclusions of the research point to the potential development of AMT from the resolution of OBMEP questions, especially by the possibility of mobilization of modeling, synthesizing and generalization processes in non-routine mathematical activities in everyday school routine.
